Guillermo Santillan (PhD student)

Guillermo was born in Lima, Peru.  He acquired his B.S. in chemistry at the University of Lima.  He is working on the synthesis of supramolecular ligands and their possible applications.  Joined April 2004.

Shady Amin (PhD student)

Shady was born in Cairo, Egypt.  He holds a B.S. in biochemistry from UC Santa Barbara.  He is working on isolation of siderophores from marine bacteria believed to be symbiotic with toxin-producing dinoflagellates.  In addition, he is studying the physiological role of siderophore-bound boron with respect to bacteria as well as phytoplankton.  Joined November 2003.

Yukiko Uchida (Master's student)

Yuki is the only member of the lab who is a native of California.  She received her B.S. in chemistry from UC San Diego.  Currently, she is working on synthesis of ligands to study Vanadium.  Joined in November 2005.

          Wenfeng Zhu (Postdoc)

Wenfeng was born in a small town in Jingzhou, formerly known as the city of Jiangling, China.  He got his PhD from Nankai University, China.  He finished a postdoc fellowship in the University of Nuttingham, UK then another at UC Davis.  He mainly works on organic synthesis of functionalized poly-pyrazole ligands that will be mimicking hydrogen-bonding in Mo and W metalloenzymes.  2005-2007.

Ba Tran (Master's student)

Ba is a native of Vietnam.  He holds a B.S. in chemistry from UC San Diego.  He is working on the organic synthesis of functionalized poly-pyrazole ligands that will be mimicking hydrogen-bonding in Mo and W metalloenzymes.  Recently, he has been exploring the binding of such ligands to various transition metals, e.g. Zn, Cu, Fe, Mo, and W.  2005-2007.

Martina Strittmatter (Visiting PhD student)

Martina is starting her PhD in the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) this year, working under Frithjof Küpper.  She is from Germany and finished her undergraduate degree in biology with an emphasis in plant physiology and biochemistry from the University of Constance in 2006.  2006-2007.

Dhuha al-Waheeb (Visiting Faculty)

Dhuha is visiting from Kuwait University, where she holds an assistant-professor position since 2003.  She finished her PhD at the American University in Washington D.C.  Dhuha is working on the isolation of marine siderophores isolated from marine bacteria associated with toxin-producing diatoms. 2006.
